NYC Mayor de Blasio Signs Transgender Rights Order

New York City Mayor de Blasio signed an executive order that allows transgender individuals to use the restroom that is congruent with their gender identity on Monday.  The order also covers locker rooms, city offices, parks, pools and recreation facilities. The only area it does not cover are school facilities.

“Somehow hate is making a comeback, we’re not going to allow that to happen.”

In a press conference at the Chelsea Recreation Center, Mayor de Blasio stated, “Somehow hate is making a comeback, we’re not going to allow that to happen.” regarding the many ongoing “bathroom bill” battles going on across the country.  He also went on to say, “We are going to stand up to hate. We are going to talk about the fact that the greatest city in the country is also the most diverse and the most inclusive.”

The Mayor’s office put out the following tweet to commemorate the event:

“We are the proud home of 25,000 transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers. They are part of the fabric of life in this city and we honor them and embrace them” de Blasio went on to say. The news comes on the heels of an announcement last week by de Blasio stating that he was lifting his personal ban on attending New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade after it was announced they are now allowing LGBT groups to participate. It has been a great week for the LGBT citizens of New York  City.

New York seems like it is becoming the transgender capital of the world. Citizens have full rights according to their gender identity. New York City continues to be one of the pioneering cities in moving LBBT rights forward. It is the place of Stonewall and now today it is setting the example for transgender rights. As a New Yorker myself, this truly warms my heart and I hope it ends up extending to the rest of the state and even the country.
