The Governor of North Carolina tried to defend HB2 while also telling Caitlyn Jenner to use the men’s room in what was a contested debate on Tuesday.

Things turned to transgender issues when moderator Chuck Todd (Meet the Press) asked how he would fix the state’s reputation without repealing the HB2 law. McCrory did nothing to help is cause by calling gender identity and gender expression a “brand new concept,” while saying they force “a major change in culture, in not just North Carolina but our country.” McCrory then went on to blame the democrats in Charlotte for passing an ordinance protecting transgender rights. ‘It was the liberals who brought this issue up,” said the Governor.

“House Bill 2 has to be repealed,” said opponent Attorney General Roy Cooper (D). “It writes discrimination into our law and has been a disaster for our economy.” Cooper also went on to say that HB2 law has been “an embarrassment to North Carolina.”

Todd then pressed further on HB2 asking McCrory what bathroom Caitlyn Jenner was legally allowed to use in North Carolina. “If she’s going to a shower facility at UNC Chapel Hill after running around the track, she’s going to use the men’s shower.” the Governor responded. He did say she could go, “wherever the private sector wants her to,” with regards to private business rules.

Things have note gone well for McCrory in the Governors race, which has seen him trailing in almost every pool. According to Real Clear Politics, McCrory is trailing by an overall average of 4.6%. In reality the HB2 law states that in North Carolina a person would have to use the restrooms that matches their birth certificate in public accommodations and not gender assigned at birth. Because Caitlyn Jenner’s birth certificate says she is female, she would be required to use the women’s shower in accordance with McCrory’s HB2 law.
