Denmark has dished out a new heart warming ad for Christmas, featuring a transgender character. The commercial is brilliantly universal, having no speaking parts. It ends simply with the Danish words (roughly): “Let the gifts do the talking.”
The spot was produced for Elgiganten, an electrical retailer located in Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They are part of the Elkjøp Group, which is owned by British Dixons Carphone Plc – one of Europe’s largest retailers of consumer electronics with operations in 26 countries worldwide.

Elgiganten’s Christmas advertising takes place in an ordinary family. But still not quite. The family’s oldest child is a LGBT teenager, which the family has not fully accepted. The mood is clearly pressure; LGBT teenager looks down nervously at her fingers, and the rest of the family members seem uneasy in her company. Suddenly the father quietly gets up to give the LGBT teenager a Christmas present. Nervously he hands her the package that LGBT teenager opens up. To her great surprise, the gift is a straightening iron – a wrapped acceptance and respect from the father’s side.
